Percentage Calculator
Three useful percentage calculations in one place.
How to Use the Percentage Calculator
Our percentage calculator provides three essential percentage operations in one clean interface. Choose the tab that matches your calculation and get instant results:
- X% of Y (Find a Percentage): Enter a percentage and a value to find the result. For example, enter 20 and 500 to find that 20% of 500 = 100. This is ideal for calculating tips, tax, discounts, or interest amounts.
- X is ?% of Y (Find the Percentage): Enter two numbers to find what percentage one number is of another. For example, if you scored 45 out of 60 on a test, enter 45 and 60 to find that 45 is 75% of 60.
- % Change (Percentage Increase or Decrease): Enter a starting value and an ending value to calculate the percentage change between them. The calculator will tell you whether it's an increase or decrease and by how much.
Understanding Percentages
The word "percent" comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred." A percentage is simply a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. It allows us to compare values on a standardized scale, making it one of the most useful mathematical concepts in everyday life.
Percentage Formulas
Step-by-Step Example
Step 1: Identify the values (Percentage = 15, Total = 2,000).
Step 2: Divide the percentage by 100 (15 / 100 = 0.15).
Step 3: Multiply by the total (0.15 × 2,000 = 300).
Result: You save ₹300, making the final price ₹1,700.
Interpretation of Results
A positive percentage change indicates growth or an increase, while a negative result indicates a decline or discount. When calculating "X is what % of Y", the result tells you the relative size of the first number compared to the second. For example, a 110% result means the first number is 10% larger than the reference value.
Real-World Applications of Percentages
Percentages are everywhere in daily life. Here are some of the most common uses:
- Shopping & Discounts: A "30% off" sale means you pay 70% of the original price. If a ₹2,000 shirt is 30% off, you save ₹600 and pay ₹1,400.
- Tips & Gratuity: In many countries, a 15-20% tip is customary at restaurants. A quick mental trick: find 10% (move the decimal one place left), then add half of that for 15%, or double it for 20%.
- Taxes: Sales tax, GST, and VAT are all expressed as percentages. If GST is 18% on a ₹1,000 item, the tax is ₹180, making the total ₹1,180.
- Interest Rates: Bank interest, loan rates, and investment returns are all expressed as percentages. An 8% annual return on a ₹1,00,000 investment yields ₹8,000 per year.
- Grades & Scores: Academic results are often expressed as percentages. Scoring 85 out of 100 is the same as scoring 85%.
- Statistics & Data: Polls, surveys, and research results use percentages to make data easier to understand and compare (e.g., "72% of respondents agreed").
Quick Mental Math Tricks for Percentages
These shortcuts can help you calculate percentages in your head without a calculator:
- 10% Shortcut: To find 10%, simply move the decimal point one place to the left. 10% of 250 = 25.
- 5% Shortcut: Find 10%, then divide by 2. 5% of 250 = 25 ÷ 2 = 12.5.
- 1% Shortcut: Move the decimal two places to the left. 1% of 250 = 2.5.
- Build from basics: You can combine these to find any percentage. For example, 15% = 10% + 5%. So 15% of 400 = 40 + 20 = 60.
- Reverse the calculation: X% of Y = Y% of X. So 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8 = 4. This trick makes some calculations much easier!
