Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate the fuel cost for your trip based on distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price.
What is a Fuel Cost Calculator?
A fuel cost calculator estimates how much fuel and money you'll need for a trip. It considers your vehicle's fuel efficiency, the distance you're traveling, and the current fuel price. This helps you budget for road trips, compare the running costs of different vehicles, and plan long-distance travel expenses accurately.
Fuel Cost Formula
The formula is straightforward: divide the trip distance by your vehicle's fuel efficiency to get the total fuel required, then multiply by the price per litre (or gallon) to get the total cost. The calculator also shows you the cost per kilometre, which is useful for comparing different vehicles or modes of transport.
Step-by-Step Example
Distance: 280 km
Vehicle: Compact SUV with fuel efficiency of 14 km/L
Fuel Price: ₹105 per litre (petrol)
Step 1: Fuel Needed = 280 ÷ 14 = 20 litres
Step 2: Total Cost = 20 × ₹105 = ₹2,100
Step 3: Cost per km = ₹2,100 ÷ 280 = ₹7.50/km
For a round trip, double the values: 40 litres of fuel costing ₹4,200 total.
Understanding Fuel Efficiency Units
Fuel efficiency is measured differently around the world. Our calculator supports all three major formats:
- km/L (Kilometres per Litre): Used in India and most of Asia. Higher is better — a car that gets 18 km/L is more efficient than one that gets 12 km/L.
- L/100km (Litres per 100 Kilometres): Used in Europe and Australia. Lower is better — a car that uses 5 L/100km is more efficient than one using 8 L/100km.
- MPG (Miles per Gallon): Used in the US and UK. Higher is better. Note: US gallons (3.785 L) are smaller than Imperial gallons (4.546 L), so the same car will have different MPG ratings.
Real-Life Use Cases
- Road trip budgeting: Planning a family vacation by car? Calculate fuel costs in advance to set a realistic travel budget alongside hotel and food expenses.
- Daily commute cost: Calculate your monthly fuel expense by entering your daily commute distance multiplied by working days. A 30 km round-trip commute at 14 km/L with ₹105/L fuel costs about ₹4,725/month (22 working days).
- Vehicle comparison: When buying a new car, compare the fuel running cost of a petrol (14 km/L) vs diesel (20 km/L) vs hybrid (25 km/L) vehicle over the same distance.
- Carpooling savings: Calculate the per-person cost when splitting fuel expenses. A ₹2,100 trip split among 4 people costs just ₹525 each.
- Delivery and logistics: Businesses can estimate fleet fuel costs for route planning and pricing decisions.
Tips to Reduce Fuel Costs
- Maintain steady speeds: Avoid aggressive acceleration and braking. Smooth driving can improve fuel efficiency by 15-30%.
- Keep tires inflated: Underinflated tires increase fuel consumption by 3-5%.
- Remove excess weight: Every 50 kg of extra weight increases consumption by 1-2%.
- Use cruise control: On highways, cruise control maintains optimal fuel efficiency.
- Regular maintenance: Clean air filters and fresh oil improve fuel efficiency.
- Plan routes: Shorter and less congested routes save fuel. Use navigation apps to avoid traffic jams.
