Fuel Cost Calculator

Estimate the fuel cost for your trip based on distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price.

What is a Fuel Cost Calculator?

A fuel cost calculator estimates how much fuel and money you'll need for a trip. It considers your vehicle's fuel efficiency, the distance you're traveling, and the current fuel price. This helps you budget for road trips, compare the running costs of different vehicles, and plan long-distance travel expenses accurately.

Fuel Cost Formula

Total Cost = (Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency) × Fuel Price
Fuel Needed = Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency (in km/L or MPG)

The formula is straightforward: divide the trip distance by your vehicle's fuel efficiency to get the total fuel required, then multiply by the price per litre (or gallon) to get the total cost. The calculator also shows you the cost per kilometre, which is useful for comparing different vehicles or modes of transport.

Step-by-Step Example

Example: Road Trip from Delhi to Jaipur

Distance: 280 km

Vehicle: Compact SUV with fuel efficiency of 14 km/L

Fuel Price: ₹105 per litre (petrol)

Step 1: Fuel Needed = 280 ÷ 14 = 20 litres

Step 2: Total Cost = 20 × ₹105 = ₹2,100

Step 3: Cost per km = ₹2,100 ÷ 280 = ₹7.50/km

For a round trip, double the values: 40 litres of fuel costing ₹4,200 total.

Frequently Asked Questions

For petrol cars, 15-20 km/l is good. For diesel, 18-25 km/l is good. Hybrid vehicles can achieve 25+ km/l. Electric vehicles measure efficiency in km/kWh.
Fill your tank completely, note the odometer reading. Drive normally until you need fuel again. Fill up again and note the liters added and new odometer reading. Divide km driven by liters used.
Yes, AC can increase fuel consumption by 5-15% depending on the vehicle, outside temperature, and AC settings. At highway speeds, AC is more efficient than open windows.

Note: This fuel cost calculator provides estimates based on the values you enter. Actual fuel consumption varies based on driving conditions, traffic, weather, vehicle load, tire pressure, and driving style. Fuel prices fluctuate daily and may differ between stations. Always budget for 10-15% more than the calculated estimate to account for real-world variables.
